Adopt a PADS Released Dog

All PADS Dogs are special, but not all are well suited for working with a client in public. These dogs are sometimes available for adoption as pets, but do not have any public access rights or special skills training. They are typically energetic young adult dogs that have either health or behavioural challenges that preclude them from working. Please review the requirements and available dogs below to see if your family and lifestyle might be a great "soft landing" for one of our special dogs.

Requirements for Adoptive Homes

    • Adoption Fees: All released dogs are spayed/neutered and up to date on vaccinations. A typical adoption fee for a PADS release dog is $3000 (+ GST/PST). This amount may vary, depending on the release reason.
    • Public Access/Working Careers: Released PADS dogs have no public access. Before release PADS evaluates each dog for other working careers, therefore, one of the conditions of adoption is typically that they may not be  certified or used by other individuals or agencies for working roles. Some exceptions, such as volunteering as a pet visitation dog, may be allowed on a case by case basis.
    • We retain the Right of First Refusal if adopters ever need to rehome a dog they have adopted from PADS.
    • Dogs may not be left home alone for more than 4 hrs. While in puppy-raising, a PADS puppy is never left alone for more than four hours total in a day, therefore they are unaccustomed to spending long periods of time alone and away from people. Since the dog is already making a big adjustment moving from the puppy-raiser’s house to yours, it is unfair to add the stress of being alone to the dog as well. If your lifestyle requires leaving the dog full time during the day, we will not consider your application.

PADS VIP PROGRAM

Are you looking for a pet for a child or adult with a disability?

Please Note

Because puppy-raisers and other volunteers have first opportunity to adopt released dogs, it is unusual to have our dogs go to general adoption, and the dogs that do typically have more challenging medical or behavioural needs.   We encourage you to look at the many adoptable pets available through the BCSPCA or other rescue organizations by visiting petfinder.com.

Alternatively, if you would like to have a pup in your life, but aren’t sure about the long-term commitment that comes with adoption, then we encourage you to consider volunteering with PADS instead!  Click HERE to learn more about our volunteer roles.

Need a PUPPY-FIX?

If there are no available dogs for adoptions, we encourage you to consider volunteering for PADS!

I'VE APPLIED! ...NOW WHAT?

The Adoptions Team is hard at work carefully reviewing each application that we receive! A week after a new pup is posted as being available for adoption, or we have received 25 applications (whichever comes first), we will mark the profile with ‘Applications Closed.’  However, due to the high number of applications, only applicants being considered to adopt this dog will be contacted regarding next steps.  If you haven’t heard anything from us by 21 days after you submitted your application, you are welcome to email us at adoptions@pads.ca.

If you are not chosen for consideration to adopt a particular dog, please don’t take it personally! Just as we do with our volunteer Puppy-Raisers and our clients, we match each individual dog to their adoptive family individually, so it was simply that other applicants were a better fit for this particular dog.  Please continue to apply when other dogs come up, and consider volunteering with us if you are able!
