Meet ZINNIA
What’s wonderful about ZINNIA
This sweet little girl is very cuddly with both human and canines, she would be a lapdog if she could! Zinnia is a fun and energetic girl who would do well in an active household. She needs a fun activity each day such as a trail walk or run with her person, and she would also do well with agility! She is also happy to stay home either on her own or with her people. With her curious and mischievous nature, she is quite the sniffy dog and loves to explore the world with her nose. Her obedience skills are excellent, and she is quite the well-mannered pup in the house. Like a true lab, this girl loves to learn and picks up on training very fast – her future person will need to be on their toes because she moves quick! Despite her high energy, sitters have said that she’s very easy to have and take care of.
WHERE ZINNIA NEEDS EXTRA SUPPORT
As lovely as Zinnia is, she tends to be a bit of a scaredy cat! Due to an incident in puppyhood when a retractable banner collapsed behind her, she has started to link other items to fear. Her low confidence and resilience manifests as fear of novel objects and changes in her environment. She can be triggered by triggered by these items and show signs of inhibition, such as cowering and attempting to escape. Her recovery in these situations often only occurs once she is removed from the trigger. Busy, noisy environments like downtown Calgary aren’t as concerning to her. It’s the little things like a broom/mop moving around, or a chair scraping on the floor behind her that cause her flight mode to kick in! Due to her low resilience and fear streak, she would do best in a home with older kids or teens who are more aware of how their actions could impact her. She can also be a bit self serving and needs extra guidance so that she does not resort to naughty dog behavior!
Home Requirements
Someone must be home the majority of the day. As with all PADS dogs that have spent their lives in the full-time company of their raisers, the living situation must accommodate not leaving Zinnia alone at home for more than 4 hours/day.
A stable home environment is required. This includes regular exercise, grooming, veterinarian care, food, as well as other necessary supplies and equipment.
Released PADS dogs do not have public access, meaning they are not allowed to enter malls, restaurants, hotels, or shops that are not pet friendly. They are only permitted to go to public locations that are pet dog friendly. Before releasing a dog from our program, PADS evaluates each dog for other working careers. Zinnia is not eligible for any other working career. Therefore, one of the conditions of adoption is that she may not be used by other agencies for other working roles (some exceptions may apply depending on the reasons of release, such as volunteering as a pet visitation dog).
