Meet Team Beans III

A Journey of Independence and Love

My life has been a mix of blessings and challengesβ€”a fulfilling career in forestry, a wonderful family life in central British Columbia, and the ongoing journey of living with Muscular Dystrophy (MD). MD, a genetic disorder that causes progressive muscle weakening, began impacting me in my late twenties. Over the years, I’ve relied on various assistive tools, from canes and crutches to walkers and, eventually, wheelchairs. Now, I can no longer stand or walk, and my arms are also significantly affected. Despite these challenges, I’m determined to stay independent, find joy, and live a full life.

In 2013, I discovered PADS, an organization that pairs people with life-changing assistance dogs. As a dog lover, the idea of having a service dog to support me was exciting. After researching, applying, and patiently waiting, I was matched with the incredible black Lab, Jasper II. Jasper and I graduated as a team in 2015, and he was by my side for over nine amazing years. Late in 2023, Jasper retired, and in the spring of 2024, my beloved companion crossed the rainbow bridge. Jasper will always hold a special place in my heartβ€”his spirit and the proud, watchful look he always gave me remain a comforting presence.

When Jasper began showing signs that it was time to retire, I started considering a successor dog. Going out in public without him felt empty, and I realized how much his presence had become part of my identity. People often asked, β€œWhere’s Jasper?” or, β€œAre you getting another service dog?” That made the decision to apply for a new PADS dog an easy one.

In July 2024, I received an unforgettable call from Sarah and Evelyn: β€œAre you ready? Is it too soon?” They told me about a beautiful, spirited black Lab named Beans III from the Pickles litter. She was smaller in size but had a huge heart. I was overwhelmed with emotion and said, β€œYes, I’m ready!”

Beans arrived at my door in early August 2024, brought by Evelyn. From the moment she bounded into my home, full of excitement and joy, we clicked. In just a short time, Beans has shown me what an incredible companion she is. She’s loving, loyal, intelligent, and full of energy. Her nickname should be β€œSparky” because of her vibrant personality.

Beans has already mastered so much. She retrieves dropped items, opens and closes doors, and carries small objects for me. Every day, she takes my shoes off and delivers them to meβ€”a task she learned quickly, showing me there’s no limit to what she can achieve. She’s fantastic in public, follows her training with precision, and makes outings enjoyable. With Beans by my side, I feel confident and dignified. She even makes grocery shopping a pleasure!

Beans isn’t just a helperβ€”she’s part of my family. She’s formed loving bonds with my friends and family, and it’s clear she’s found her place in my heart and home.

I’m deeply grateful to PADS, their staff, and all the amazing volunteers who made Beans’ journey to me possible. A special thank you to Bean’s breeders, her trainers, and the wonderful volunteers who dedicate their time and love to this mission. Huge shoutouts to Sarah, Miranda, Evelyn, and the incredible Wendy P. Beans and I hope to see you all soon!

Thank you! – Dave, PADS Client
