Hi everyone, it’s Skaha III here with my April update. I’m now 7 months old, on April 25, and it’s been another busy and exciting month as a Pacific Assistance Dog in training.
This month, I got to experience my first Easter. While I wasn’t allowed to help search for chocolate eggs (something about them being dangerous for dogs?), I did get to try on a pair of bunny ears, which I think made me look pretty cute. Over the Easter long weekend, another PADS dog, Jones, came to stay with us. He even gave me some pointers about living here and showed me a great window to look out into the back yard, and he wanted to share his old kennel with me, lol. This was Jones’ home before he went on to advanced training, and then I replaced him here. I have big paws to fill. Jones and I had a great time playing in the yard, going on hikes together, and then relaxing back at home over the weekend.
With the warmer weather, my raisers set up a small paddling pool in the backyard. I had a lot of fun jumping in and out of it—it was a great way to cool off and burn some energy.
I also had the chance to go to a few new places this month, including an eye doctor’s office and the polling station where my raisers voted in the federal election. Both were great opportunities to practice calm behaviour in different environments.
I made a few Instagram posts about two PADS sponsors—WOOF! Dog grooming sponges and Rascal Beverages, check out my Instagram page at @padsskaha. I also got a bath at a new pet store that has a self-wash station and left there smelling pretty fresh.
In puppy class and day-to-day training, I’ve been continuing to build my skills. I’m working hard on loose leash walking, settling, distraction training (especially staying calm around other dogs), and improving my recall. I’ve also started jumping into the back of my raisers’ SUV when it’s time for a ride. It’s a bit of a jump down, though, so they’re still helping me down out of the vehicle, to keep me safe.
All in all, it’s been a fun and productive month. Thanks for following along. I’ll be back next month with more updates as I continue my journey.
Skaha
