Team Toast
“It didn’t take long for Toast to capture the hearts and minds of the Surrey Christian Elementary community. From his very first visit to the day his placement with me was confirmed, Toast felt right at home walking the hallways and connecting with hundreds of students each day.
Toast typically begins his day by greeting staff around the coffee pot before heading out—rain or shine—for bus duty, welcoming students as they arrive for the day. After a quick rest, he joins me as I walk through the school, popping into classrooms from Kindergarten to Grade 7. We are often invited to join story time or participate in learning activities, and we never tire of it!
Toast has developed strong relationships with a few students who can feel hesitant about going to class. A quick pet and an offer to walk them to their classrooms often help shift the tone of their day. This past semester, Toast has also brought a sense of calm to students feeling nervous or anxious about things like Grade 6 vaccinations, performances, or field trips.
One area where Toast truly shines is supporting students whose emotions may be heightened after interpersonal conflicts. His calm presence helps students regulate, allowing them to engage in restorative conversations more successfully. It has been amazing to see students who previously struggled with these moments find the ability to work through challenges, thanks to Toast’s steady support.
At the end of the school day, Toast returns to duty, saying goodbye to students and parents as they head home. He has been an incredible asset in so many situations this semester, and we’re excited to see him continue to grow into his role next year.
Outside of school, Toast loves letting loose at the dog park, carrying his toys around in his mouth, and remains oddly fascinated with ice cubes. He’s part of a young, busy family, and he is deeply loved and adored by all of us.
On behalf of Surrey Christian and my family, a BIG thank you to the village that has been part of Toast’s journey so far. He is making such a positive impact on our school community and our home, and we are so grateful for our partnership with PADS.”
