Spring II joined our home on January 6, and it has been such a rewarding first month. When we first met her, she was quite shy and preferred to just sit in one place rather than follow a lure, but it only took a couple of days for her to really warm up. She quickly became a quiet, sweet, and comfortable member of the house. She even impressed us by sleeping through the night on her very first evening! On only her second day with us, she attended her first puppy class.
While she mostly stayed in the corner playing “Find the Kibble” in a towel, she was completely non-reactive to the other dogs who were very interested in her. She was even relaxed enough to take a nice nap right in the middle of class! Since then, we’ve been working hard on her socialization. We took her to the park to see the ocean and trees, where she did a great job observing other dogs, ducks, geese, and seagulls from a respectable distance.
Potty training is a work in progress, but she is a very fast learner. We did discover that she absolutely hates the rain, which was a bit of a challenge during a solid week of wet weather, but she was so incredibly excited when the sun finally came out! In terms of training, she is already a superstar. Her default position is a Sit; she’s mastered it so well that she offers a sit whenever she’s confused or isn’t sure what to do next. Within this first month, she has also mastered Down, Stand, and “Leave It.” She ended January weighing a healthy 22 lbs, and we are so proud of the progress she’s making.
