The volunteer noted above has reviewed the Safe Care and Handling Orientation with me.(Required)
I understand that this Agreement pertains only to this dog and each additional dog will require filling out a separate form.(Required)

Guidelines and Limitations of the Support Handler Role

  1. Public Access: The Support Handler has no public access rights with the puppy, and typically should be handling the puppy out of cape, with the exception of within the workplace of the Puppy-Raiser.
  2. Outdoor Activities: The puppy-in-training must be on leash at all times while under the care of the Support Handler unless they are in a private fenced yard. While short on leash walks are allowed, off leash parks are not.
  3. Duration of Care: The intent of this policy is not to replace the raiser or PADS sitters, and the care of the Support Handler should never exceed 1 hour except in extraordinary circumstances (health emergency, etc). Crating and securing a PADS approved sitter should remain the primary go toโ€™s for care.
  4. Taking on Additional Responsibilities: Support Handlers who would like to upgrade their skills and volunteer involvement are encouraged to do so, however, they will still need to go through the full volunteer onboarding process for the PADS volunteer role that they are interested in.

Ownership & Access

  1. PADS owns the puppy; at all times, the puppy is the property of PADS.
  2. The Support Handler acknowledges that PADS employees, and their duly authorized representatives must be provided access to the puppy at reasonable times to facilitate and protect the health, safety, well-being, and training of the puppy.

Health Care Commitment

The Support Handler must comply with:
  1. Any/all medical or veterinary advice as instructed by the PADS medical team &/or authorized veterinary professionals
  2. The PADS Medical Protocol for Illness and Injury (available online at hydrant.pads.ca/health/illness-and-injury/)
  • Notification:ย If at any time the puppy is injured or shows signs of illness, the Support Handler must notify PADS in accordance with the PADS Medical Protocol for illness and injury.
  • Duty to Provide Care: If PADS does not promptly instruct the Support Handler about the steps to take, or if the state of the puppyโ€™s health requires immediate action, then the Support Handler may call a veterinarian for medical care.
    1. The veterinarianโ€™s expenses will be paid by PADS.
  • Clauses

    1. Survival: PADSโ€™ waiver of any breach or violation of any provision of this Agreement shall not operate or be construed as a waiver by PADS of any subsequent breach or violation.
    2. Termination of Agreement: PADS may terminate the Agreement at any time without notice if PADS has determined that the puppyโ€™s care and socialization will benefit by terminating the agreement. The Support Handler may also terminate this agreement at any time. If the Support Handler would like to terminate the agreement, they should contact volunteer@pads.ca.

    Acknowledgement & Signature

We look forward to creating a successful and enjoyable relationship with you as a volunteer at the Pacific Assistance Dogs Society. Summer Safety Tips - Toe Bean Protection ๐Ÿพ

Once the sun starts to shine, the ground can heat up quickly. Hot surfaces can be dangerous for dog paws, so keep these tips in mind to help keep your dog's toe beans safe:

โ˜€๏ธ Stay out of the sun - Schedule your walks for early in the day before the sun has a chance to heat the ground up, or in the evenings once it's cooled down.

โ˜€๏ธ Be mindful of different terrains - Artificial grass, asphalt, and cement can all heat up quick, and darker surfaces can require more caution.

โ˜€๏ธ Test the temperature - An easy tip to prevent any paw pad burns is to test the temperature of the ground with the back of your hand. If you can't keep your hand on the surface for 10 seconds, it's too hot for your pups feet!

โ˜€๏ธ Cover up - Booties can help to protect feet if your dog needs to be on a hot surface.

The best updates include the words โ€˜Itโ€™s been life-changing.โ€™

After a long career as a police officer, and a diagnosis of PTSD, weโ€™re pleased to report that Hughie now gets to enjoy his retirement with PADS Silky II by his side. Running errands, attending appointments, and even getting sleep have all become easier since Silky came into his life: โ€œThe attention and companionship that Silky offers every day is truly amazingโ€ฆ my quality of life both at home and out in public is greatly improved.โ€

Happy Tongue Out Tuesday from these party pups ๐ŸŒŠโ˜€๏ธ

Even service dogs need time to let loose! What better way to cool off as the weather heats up than to leave their capes at home and head to the beach. Thanks @campuscaninesubc for organizing this beach party and Bill Ng for the photos ๐Ÿ“ธ
