What’s wonderful about DONNER II

Donner II is a goofy, active guy who is looking for an adventurous, outdoorsy family to share life’s experiences with. He will do best with adopters who enjoy outdoor activities, dog sports, and have a large, securely fenced yard where he can safely burn off energy and explore. He loves tug toys, playtime, and spending time with his people and doggy friends. He is cooperative with nail trims and grooming but prefers a gentle spa-like approach to bath time. No spraying please!

Donner II approaches life with enthusiasm and an open heart. If there’s a creek, pond or other chest deep body of water nearby, you can count on him leaping in and enthusiastically drinking it. While he’s drawn to water like a moth to a flame, his swimming skills are still a work in progress – a life jacket and patience are essential.

Although he prefers to take the lead, he has a sweet, snuggly, and affectionate side and likes to build connection with his people by resting his head on a foot or lap. Be prepared for a lap full of drool.

At home, Donner II settles well in his kennel and enjoys being included in family life. He is a sensitive dog that finds big transitions and alone time stressful. He will need a family that has a caretaker who works from home, and is willing to build confidence through separation training with a CSAT dog trainer.

WHERE DONNER II NEEDS EXTRA SUPPORT

Like many dogs with big personalities, Donner II can sometimes experience big emotions. When he becomes overstimulated or overwhelmed, he may struggle with impulse control, resulting in zoomies, barking, or difficulty settling down. He does best with clear expectations, consistent boundaries, and people who can remain calm, patient and confident through life’s challenges.

During periods of stress, Donner II may show signs of anxiety, including barking when left alone. He tends to bark when startled by loud noises, a knock at the door, or the doorbell. He takes his emotional cues from the people around him and will do best with adopters who model calm confidence and help him feel secure without reinforcing his anxieties.

Donner II enjoys walks but likes to pull ahead and is easily distracted by other dogs. He will do best with a strong, committed handler who is willing to continue working on these skills using positive, patient guidance. While he’s been comfortable wearing a Halti or harness in the past, he developed some anxiety about things being placed over his head following his recent neuter surgery and will need gentle, consistent support to rebuild his confidence and overcome this fear.

Car rides are not his favourite activity. He feels most comfortable travelling in an SUV or vehicle with a solid hammock style seat barrier.

Although Donner II thrives outdoors, he loves to pick up sticks and occasionally snack on grass. He will need someone willing to help him work through this quirk.

For those willing to embrace his quirks, drool, and larger-than-life personality, Donner II will reward them with unwavering loyalty, endless adventures, and a one-of-a-kind friendship. He’s a dog who loves deeply, lives fully, and is ready to be part of his forever pack.



Donner II’s tendency to become overstimulated at times make him unsuitable as a working dog.

HEALTH INFO

Donner II is tattooed, micro-chipped, eyes checked, hips x-rayed, and vaccinations are up to date.

Therapy Work: Due to his tendency to become overwhelmed, PADS does NOT give Donner II approval to be certified as a volunteer pet visitation dog (i.e St Johns Ambulance/Pets and Friends, etc).

HOME REQUIREMENTS

Someone must be home for most of the day. As with all PADS dogs that have spent their lives in the full-time company of their raisers, the living situation must accommodate not leaving Donner II alone at home for more than 4 hours/day.

A stable home environment is required. This includes regular exercise, grooming, veterinarian care, food, as well as other necessary supplies and equipment.

Released PADS dogs do not have public access, meaning they are not allowed to enter malls, restaurants, hotels, or shops that are not pet friendly. They are only permitted to go to public locations that are pet dog friendly. Before releasing a dog from our program, PADS evaluates each dog for other working careers. Donner II is not eligible for any other working career. Therefore, one of the conditions of adoption is that he may not be used by other agencies for other working roles.
