ABOUT PADS

PADS dogs are raised and trained on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded lands of the Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), Səl̓ílwətaʔ (Tsleil-Waututh), xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Ktunaxa ɁamakɁis (Ktunaxa), Ĩyãħé Nakón mąkóce (Stoney), Niitsítpiis-stahkoii ᖹᐟᒧᐧᐨᑯᐧ ᓴᐦᖾᐟ (Blackfoot / Niitsítapi ᖹᐟᒧᐧᒣᑯ), Tsuut’ina & Michif Piyii (Métis) Nations, and the Syilx Okanagan People.

We acknowledge the importance of these lands and their history. We do this to reaffirm our commitment and responsibility in improving relationships between nations and to improving our own understanding of local Indigenous peoples and their cultures.

We breed, raise and train fully certified assistance dogs. Our service (mobility & PTSD) and hearing dogs provide life-changing independence to those with disabilities. Our accredited facility dogs work with community professionals, such as teachers, RCMP and psychologists to help support healthy communities.

PADS is a fully accredited member of Assistance Dogs International.

September is National Service Dog Month. It’s al September is National Service Dog Month. It’s also Deaf Awareness Month. So let’s take a look at hearing dogs and the life-changing work that they do 🐶

PADS hearing dogs support clients who are deaf or hard of hearing. They’re trained to alert their partner to a variety of sounds, from alarms ringing to their name being called. Their skills also go beyond these tasks and we’re often told that these dogs help their clients gain a greater sense of safety and confidence.

What else would you like to know about hearing dogs? Let us know in the comments!

Petra has been busy learning the ropes from PADS Nessa, who has been with @vanfamservices and Treehouse since 2019. Nessa’s presence has reassured countless children in the way that only a dog can, and now it’s Petra’s turn to change lives.

Petra’s partner reports that she has been bringing the biggest smiles to everyone she meets and everywhere she goes.

We’re so proud to witness Petra follow in Nessa’s paw prints, and are excited to see her bring her own personality to this important work. Read more about PADS Petra through the link in our bio 🔗

This week, we celebrate the International Week of This week, we celebrate the International Week of Deaf People.

Did you know that PADS' story began more than 35 years ago with a mission to support individuals who are Deaf or hard of hearing? We took our first steps as the Western Canada Handi & Hearing Ear Dog Society and were guided by a vision of creating greater independence, confidence, and connection.

Today, hearing dogs remain at the heart of our programs. These amazing dogs are trained to alert their partners to important sounds in daily life, opening doors to safety, inclusion, and freedom.

Together, let's join the strength and contributions of the Deaf community and reaffirm our commitment to building a world that is inclusive and accessible for all.
