PADS breeds, raises, and trains fully certified assistance dogs. Our service (mobility & PTSD) and hearing dogs provide life-changing independence to those with disabilities other than blindness. Our accredited facility dogs work with community professionals, such as teachers, RCMP, and psychologists, to help support wellness in our community.

ABOUT THE POSITION 

As a Grant Writer, you’ll play a vital role in our Communications & Development team, researching, writing, and managing grants to support PADS’ mission and strategic plan. You’ll be responsible for preparing compelling grant proposals, managing grant reporting, and contributing to the development and implementation of effective fundraising strategies. Ensuring compliance with grant regulations and maximizing funding opportunities is critical to this role’s success. 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES 

Grant Writing, Research & Reporting (70%) 

  • Research and identify grant opportunities that align with PADS’ mission and strategic plan. 
  • Conduct research on prospective donors and prepare donor profiles and reports. 
  • Write and submit grant proposals to foundations, corporations, and government entities ensuring alignment with PADS’ brand and voice. 
  • Maintain an organized database (Salesforce) of grant opportunities, applications, and outcomes. 
  • Manage the grant application process, including tracking deadlines and ensuring timely submission of proposals. 
  • Develop and maintain relationships with grant-making organizations and foundations. 
  • Prepare and submit required grant reports, ensuring compliance with all grant requirements and guidelines. 
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of grant-funded projects and report on outcomes. 
  • Work in a supervisory/support capacity with fundraising committees, interns, and volunteers.. 

Fundraising Communications (30%) 

  • Assist with the development and writing of fundraising materials that align with overall organizational messaging, including appeal letters, donor reports, and sponsorship proposals. 
  • Collaborate with the Communications team to create content for newsletters, social media, and the website to support fundraising efforts. 
  • Track and report on fundraising progress, providing regular updates to the Fund Development Manager, Director of Communications & Development, and the Executive Director. 
  • Participate in departmental meetings, bringing forward topics for discussion and contributing to the development of strategies. 
  • Provide editorial support to the team, including writing, editing, and proofreading. 
  • Work with the digital content coordinator to align grant-related communications with overall marketing and media strategies. 
  • Represent PADS at community events and conduct presentations or educational sessions as needed. 
  • Assist with the planning and execution of fundraising events and campaigns. 

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS 

Technical Qualifications

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 360 (required) 
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite (preferred) 
  • Understanding of web-based communication platforms (e.g., WordPress, Constant Contact) 
  • Experience with grant management software i.e. Salesforce NPSP and Account Engagement (preferred) 
  • Experience with academic literature, peer-reviewed research, and their use in developing robust granting applications. 
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate complex information clearly and persuasively. 
  • Strong research and analytical skills 
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and good relationship-building skills 
  • Proven ability to work well with a wide range of individuals in a team-based workplace 
  • Experience in working effectively with committees, interns, and volunteers in a supervisory/support capacity. 
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within tight deadlines 
  • Creativity, flexibility, and attention to detail 
  • Deadline-oriented 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE 

Experience 

Proven experience in securing 6-7 figure grants 

5+ years of experience in grant writing, preferably in the non-profit sector 

Experience with reviewing and providing feedback on written materials 

Education 

High School Diploma (required) 

Post-secondary education in a related discipline (e.g., journalism, communications, English, or similar) 

WORKING CONDITIONS 

Physical Effort 

This position requires all-day use of the computer and screens; must be able to sit for periods of time and focus. 

Standing and bending are required occasionally. 

Physical Environment 

This position is located at either of the PADS facilities, either in Burnaby or Calgary. 

There may be some opportunity to work remotely. 

Sensory Attention 

This role requires both on-site and off-site work.

DETAILS & COMPENSATION 

This is a full-time position working out of our Burnaby or Calgary Campus. The Grant Writer will share work space and equipment with other employees at PADS’ facilities. Most of the time, work is scheduled from Monday to Friday, 7.5 hours per day, from 9 am to 5 pm with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break. There may occasionally be a need to work evenings or weekends. 

The position is compensated at $55K-$65K annually, with a benefits package that includes RRSP Match and Extended Health after the 3-month probation period.
