#PADSDogMilestones - 5 Weeks Puppies #PADSDogMilestones - 5 Weeks

Puppies get most of their sustenance from moistened kibble though their mom may let them nurse occasionally. Puppies continue to learn and explore an expanding environment. New sights, sounds and surfaces are important to daily socialization. Puppies are able to go outside as a litter or in small groups to learn about different sights, sounds and surfaces, always under the careful watch of their breeder caretaker.

FOOD! Puppies get their first taste of solid food and have their first clicker training session!

The puppies continue to get better at playing as they start to get steadier on their feet. This means that absorbent bedding is often not needed across the pen allowing for a toileting area to be set up on one side of the pen. 4 weeks also marks a shift in their relationship with mom, the reduced dependency on food and increased independence means mom will start spending less time with them (their teeth are now fully coming in after all!).

#PADSDogMilestones - 3 weeks This mar #PADSDogMilestones - 3 weeks

This marks the beginning of the Socialization Period. The puppies ears open and they move out of the whelping box and into a pen to allow them more space to explore and play with their littermates. Their first teeth also start to erupt.

The puppies are developing more vocal range and start to make new sounds - yips, growls and even barks! They may even bark or growl when you pick them up — this is nothing to be concerned about at this stage – they are just trying out their vocal cords. Similar to babies as they start to babble nonsense in the early days of speech.

Puppies also develop a startle response at 3 weeks however they tend to recover very quickly. New items, sounds and experiences are very important and this is also the week that we introduce kennels to the environment for puppies to explore and nap in if they choose.

The puppies' eyes start to open, this marks the beginning of a transitional period when puppies become more aware of their environment and start becoming less dependent on their mom for warmth and toileting. Around this time puppies also begin to take their first wobbly steps.

Puppies are born blind and deaf and rely on their Puppies are born blind and deaf and rely on their mother both for heat and to help them toilet. For this reason, they make a lot of sounds that are geared towards getting her attention. The twitches they make as they sleep may seem random but they are actually their neurological systems building the capacity to be able to stand within the next couple of weeks.

At PADS we start structured handling exercises, called Early Neurological Stimulation, at 3 days old, which can help to develop a more robust cardiovascular and neurological system.
