Accredited facility DOGS

Applications for our Accredited Facility Dogs are currently closed.

Life-changing Facility Dogs

PADS Accredited Facility Dogs (AFDs) are partnered with community care professionals where they can positively impact the physical, social, emotional, or mental wellbeing of the community. These dogs often work in organisations such as hospitals, schools, police victim services, child and youth advocacy programs, and hospices.ย

ACCREDITED FACILITY VS THERAPY DOG

PADS AFDs differ from therapy dogs. While both can offer comfort and healing to clients, Accredited Facility Dogs are purpose-bred and purpose-trained for their roles within their individual organisations. They are more than a comforting presence; they are trained to do specific tasks to facilitate wellness. PADS AFDs undertake two and a half years of training and must pass both accreditation from Assistance Dogs International and a public access test, allowing them to be invited into areas where pets are not usually allowed, such as schools, courtrooms, and various medical facilities.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

PADS AFDs are placed in organizations across Canada that specialize in education, justice, wellness, or healthcare. Applicants must be employed by the organization, commit to being the AFDโ€™s primary handler, and manage the organizationโ€™s relationship with PADS.ย
