Belle turned one on the last day of the month. This led to a reflection on the many changes that have taken place since Belle came into my life. She has gone from a little puppy who had to be carried down the stairs and who was content with a small world. Belle loves to explore and now ventures further afield, both inside her enclosed space and in the yard in general.
Over the months, we have been working on Belle remaining down whenever she comes into the bathroom with me. She now, rather consistently, goes down without being asked. Sometimes I don’t realize that she has come in behind me. Toenail trimming used to be a three-person job – one to hold her, one to trim the nails, and one to give treats. Now, with the help of a frozen Kong, it is a one-person task.
Belle and I went to several second-hand stores searching for the perfect table. This has become her grooming table, which she readily jumps up on every morning for a good brushing.
Belle has developed good obedience skills and faithfully comes when called. She is less distracted by people we meet, and is learning to contain her impulses when other dogs are around. She can go on a walk in the forest without picking up any pine cones!
My grandchildren love Belle dearly, and she is an important addition to their lives as well.
