11 Months Old – Happy Valentine’s Month!
Wishing my first “Happy Valentine’s Day” to all my sponsors, family, friends, donors, and the very special people in our community who make my journey possible—you are loved more than all the treats in my training pouch!
I’m 11 months old now and February was full of big dreams, big adventures, and just a tiny plot twist. I was all set for my very first plane ride (cue the tail wags and excited wiggles)… but it turns out some hotels only roll out the welcome mat for fully-certified service dogs. Since I’m still polishing my superhero skills, I pivoted to a fabulous 5-day staycation with my wonderful PADS sitters, Louise and Gary. And let me tell you—I made myself right at home. Between the cozy snuggles, excellent company, and carefully supervised “quality control” of treats, I’d say I handled the change of plans like a true professional-in-training.
And even though I didn’t get to go on a plane ride, I still had a very important assignment at Calgary International Airport—waiting for our friend Nina. I held my post like a pro (even through all the waiting… and waiting… and more waiting), soaking up compliments from travellers along the way. Once Nina arrived, I proudly stepped into my role as tour guide.
We explored the stunning trails of Elbow Falls, Johnston Canyon, and the breathtaking views of Banff, and made a stop at PARK Distillery Restaurant + Bar—where my Hoomans enjoyed the menu and I stayed committed to my fine dining experience (kibble, served just the way I like it). We ventured through the foothills of Longview, stood in awe of the very large Okotoks Erratic (seriously… it’s just sitting there!), and I received VIP treatment at Hardknox Brewery with a dog biscuit that can only be described as legendary. My Hooman even tried to scoop me up for a photo—but surprise! I’m not so “little” anymore, and she burst into laughter mid-lift. The best part? Behind us, a window with perfectly placed hearts made it look like someone added them just for us—pretty sure that means I nailed the Valentine’s vibe. We even wrapped up an evening with live music at Tribal Connections in Okotoks—don’t worry, I kept things cool, calm, and just a little bit country!
Training this month was next-level fun! I got the full experience—virtual, in-class, and a special 1:1 outing with my Trainer Extraordinaire, Nicole. We headed to Southcentre Mall, which is basically a playground of distractions… and I nailed it. I practiced waiting politely at doorways, tucking in close while my Hooman browsed, and matching her pace no matter how unpredictably she switched between “slow stroll” and “speed walk” (I’m convinced she does it just to keep me on my toes). Every outing like this helps me build the confidence and manners I’ll need for my future partner.
I also accompanied my Hooman to another appointment at Calgary Retinal Consultants, where I quietly slipped into my “working dog” role. I tucked neatly under her chair, stayed calm, and waited patiently—hardly noticeable at all (which, apparently, is exactly the point). It might not sound exciting, but these are the moments where I’m really learning how to be steady, focused, and dependable when it matters most.
In between all of that, I made sure to keep up with one of my favourite traditions—weekly adventure walks with my best buddy, Happy.
Every day, I’m growing, learning, and getting one step closer to becoming the dog I’m meant to be. Thank you for being part of my journey—I couldn’t do this without you!
With puppy wags and Valentine kisses,
Shelby II
