3. Responsibilities

3.1 Have you been involved in caring for or raising an Assistance dog before?

3.2 Tell us about your experience caring for or raising an Assistance dog.

3.3 How many hours a day will the puppy be left alone while in your care (Note that assistance dog puppies can not be left alone for more than 4 hours a day)?

3.4 Along with many hours of interaction with the family, young puppies need 20+ minutes of vigorous walking and play numerous times a day. As pups grow, their exercise needs approach three miles of walking per day. Do you have the time and ability and are you willing to provide such daily interaction and exercise?

3.5 Please give a short description of the type of activity, when and where you would be able to exercise and play with the pup.

3.6 Do you agree to keep the PADS puppy or dog on a lead or supervised in a dog-safe environment when outside?

3.7 How many outings do you typically take on a weekend?

3.8 What kind of exercise can you commit to giving the dog each weekend? Please note that Weekend Advanced sitters may be directed to limit activity if the dog needs to relax.

3.8 Please give a short description of the places and types of socialization experiences you could give the pup on a regular basis. PADS puppies are sometimes moved to a different handler, to provide the puppy with different life experiences, or to provide the raiser with a puppy that is more compatible with that raiser's skill level. .

3.9 Our puppies need to experience a variety of environments with exposure to sidewalks, traffic, a variety of people, and as they mature, busier places. Pups should go on at least 5 outings per week that are specifically focused on the pup. Are you able to take a variety of regular outings and provide the puppy one on one time for such outings?

3.10 Do you understand that PADS assigns and moves puppies to provide the best learning experience for both the puppy and the volunteer?

3.11 Are you willing to comply with all PADS recommendations and policies for the care, training, health care and placement of the PADS dog?

3.14 Are you able or willing to care for a puppy that does not have public access (only suitable for volunteers that are retired or work from home)?

3.15 Most PADS puppies remain intact (unneutered/spayed) until at least 18 months (longer if they are chosen for our breeding program). Are you comfortable having an intact male (restricting their access to females in heat) or female (managing heat cycles and limiting access to intact males during heats)?

4. Breeder Caretaker Responsibilities

4.1 Are you/your family prepared to provide round the clock care for a litter of puppies for 8 weeks, as often as twice per year?

4.2 Are you willing to dedicate a minimum 10x10 area of your home to whelping/puppies during the 8 week rearing period?

4.3 Breeding dogs and puppies must be seen regularly by the PADS staff and veterinarians, are you comfortable attending to these appointments or facilitating arrangements with other volunteers?

4.4 Do you have ground floor access to a fenced-in outdoor area?

5. Advanced Sitter Responsibilites

5.5 How much time do you have to devote to training homework each day? It can be spread out throughout the day and does not have to be one block of time.

8.2 You are not signing up to be involved with a single puppy, rather becoming a member of the PADS Puppy-Raising community that is collectively responsible for building success in our puppies. This means the puppy you are assigned may change during your first 2 year commitment if needed to support the success of our puppies and volunteers. Do you understand and agree to this commitment?

8.2 You are not signing up to be involved with a single dog, rather becoming a member of the PADS Community where we are collectively responsible for building success in our dogs.
