ABOUT PADS

PADS dogs are raised and trained on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded lands of the Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), Səl̓ílwətaʔ (Tsleil-Waututh), xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Ktunaxa ɁamakɁis (Ktunaxa), Ĩyãħé Nakón mąkóce (Stoney), Niitsítpiis-stahkoii ᖹᐟᒧᐧᐨᑯᐧ ᓴᐦᖾᐟ (Blackfoot / Niitsítapi ᖹᐟᒧᐧᒣᑯ), Tsuut’ina & Michif Piyii (Métis) Nations, and the Syilx Okanagan People.

We acknowledge the importance of these lands and their history. We do this to reaffirm our commitment and responsibility in improving relationships between nations and to improving our own understanding of local Indigenous peoples and their cultures.

We breed, raise and train fully certified assistance dogs. Our service (mobility & PTSD) and hearing dogs provide life-changing independence to those with disabilities. Our accredited facility dogs work with community professionals, such as teachers, RCMP and psychologists to help support healthy communities.

PADS is a fully accredited member of Assistance Dogs International.

Summer Safety Tips - Keep it Cool 😎

With summer well and truly here, we're all thinking of ways to beat the heat. Here's some tips to help keep your dogs cool:
☀️ Restrict exercise to early mornings or later evenings when temperatures are cooler.
🌊 Take your pup for a dip at the beach, or consider a small kids pool for them to paddle in. If your dog is swimming, try to ensure they're not ingesting the water!
💧 Ensure your dogs always have access to cool drinking water. Adding ice cubes can also be a great way to cool down and offer some enrichment!
⛱️ We know a lot of dogs who love to sunbathe, but make sure to always offer shaded areas for them to relax in.

How are you keeping cool this summer? Let us know in the comments!

Summer Safety Tips - Toe Bean Protection 🐾

Once the sun starts to shine, the ground can heat up quickly. Hot surfaces can be dangerous for dog paws, so keep these tips in mind to help keep your dog's toe beans safe:

☀️ Stay out of the sun - Schedule your walks for early in the day before the sun has a chance to heat the ground up, or in the evenings once it's cooled down.

☀️ Be mindful of different terrains - Artificial grass, asphalt, and cement can all heat up quick, and darker surfaces can require more caution.

☀️ Test the temperature - An easy tip to prevent any paw pad burns is to test the temperature of the ground with the back of your hand. If you can't keep your hand on the surface for 10 seconds, it's too hot for your pups feet!

☀️ Cover up - Booties can help to protect feet if your dog needs to be on a hot surface.

The best updates include the words ‘It’s been life-changing.’

After a long career as a police officer, and a diagnosis of PTSD, we’re pleased to report that Hughie now gets to enjoy his retirement with PADS Silky II by his side. Running errands, attending appointments, and even getting sleep have all become easier since Silky came into his life: “The attention and companionship that Silky offers every day is truly amazing… my quality of life both at home and out in public is greatly improved.”

Happy Tongue Out Tuesday from these party pups 🌊☀️

Even service dogs need time to let loose! What better way to cool off as the weather heats up than to leave their capes at home and head to the beach. Thanks @campuscaninesubc for organizing this beach party and Bill Ng for the photos 📸
