ABOUT PADS

PADS dogs are raised and trained on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded lands of the Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), Səl̓ílwətaʔ (Tsleil-Waututh), and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations.

We acknowledge the importance of these lands and their history. We do this to reaffirm our commitment and responsibility in improving relationships between nations and to improving our own understanding of local Indigenous peoples and their cultures.

We breed, raise and train fully certified assistance dogs. Our service (mobility & PTSD) and hearing dogs provide life-changing independence to those with physical disabilities other than blindness. Our accredited facility dogs work with community professionals, such as teachers, RCMP and psychologists to help support healthy communities.

PADS is a fully accredited member of Assistance Dogs International.

A huge ✨THANK YOU✨ to all of our incredible participants, teams, donors and supporters who have helped us to reach our first milestone over the weekend!

Why MOVE with us?
❤️Training for one certified PADS Dog takes approximately 2 to 2 1/2 years and the costs to breed, raise, train and support each dog throughout their careers is $35K. We rely on our community, volunteers, and fundraisers like MOVE to continue this amazing work.
💛Our service (mobility & PTSD) and hearing dogs provide life-changing independence to those with physical disabilities other than blindness.
💚Our Accredited Facility Dogs work with community professionals, such as teachers, RCMP, and psychologists to help support healthy communities.
💙MOVE is about fun and is a great way to connect with your dog, nature, your community, etc - and don't you deserve a little fun? We think you do!

👣 You can still register to MOVE with us or donate to one of our awesome movers or teams by going to the link in our bio or stories.

Stella is one of our newest volunteers, ands she has jumped right in with both feet! She was willing to expedite their onboarding process in order to fulfill our urgent need for new raisers and sitters.

Stella arrived a little late to our most recent online session for the very best reason -- she had just picked up her first PADS dog for sitting. We're so grateful for Stella and her willingness to help out, and for all the community coaches, trainers, raisers and sitters that are assisting her to get settled in the PADS community.

Meet Greer, who joined PADS in May as our temporary Digital Engagement & Accessibility Coordinator while Katie is away on Mat Leave. Greer has worked for a number of years in customer service, administration and education and has spent many years volunteering in law enforcement in several capacities, most recently in victim services.

Here are some answers to questions we asked Greer to get to know her a little bit better:
What is a fun fact about yourself?
❤️I recently got married (in June) and honeymooned in Iceland - hence the photo:)
If you were a PADS dog, what kind of work would you do?
🐶I would be an AFD dog in either a school or judicial environment because I love to have my head massaged and I feel like that would happen a lot.

🎉Congratulations to Sierra and @freedomservicedogs Chorizo and to Breeder-Caretakers Marie & Jocelyn for your capable hands and caring hearts. To kick off our first MOVE Monday -- meet MOVERS Tia & PADS Merlot of Team How-Merlot-Can-You-Go!

🐶 Accredited Facility Dog PADS Merlot and Tia work together for the Regina Police Service (@reginapolice) and are based out of the Regina Children’s Justice Centre (RCJC). The RCJC is an integrated unit consisting of Police and the Ministry of Social Services.

🏋️ Tia and Merlot have been fundraising for MOVE since July and have raised an impressive $4,665!! They are already more than halfway to their goal of raising $7000.00! PAW-some Work TEAM!!

👮 If you are wondering how they came up with this number, then who better to explain then Tia and Merlot, themselves:

"Merlot has worked for the Regina Police Service for 7 years. In those 7 years, through Interviews, Court Preps, Court, and Critical Incident Stress Management briefings, we have encountered approx. 1000 people. We will walk/row/run (I will leave the swimming to the dogs), 7 km a day to keep moving and raise money and awareness for all the amazing work PADS and their dogs do."

August 7-13th is International Assistance Dog Week – a special time to recognize, appreciate, and honour all the devoted, hardworking assistance dogs that support individuals with disabilities every day! It is also an opportunity to celebrate the important individuals at "the other end of the leash" – the people or groups that make assistance dogs happen (volunteers, donors, staff, clients, etc.).

Will you join us in celebrating International Assistance Dog Week?

How will you honour your Assistance Dog Hero?

We look forward to hearing your stories this week of how Assistance Dogs and their villages have touched your life. Please share and tag us!
