ABOUT PADS

PADS dogs are raised and trained on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded lands of the Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), Səl̓ílwətaʔ (Tsleil-Waututh), and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations.

We acknowledge the importance of these lands and their history. We do this to reaffirm our commitment and responsibility in improving relationships between nations and to improving our own understanding of local Indigenous peoples and their cultures.

We breed, raise and train fully certified assistance dogs. Our service (mobility & PTSD) and hearing dogs provide life-changing independence to those with disabilities. Our accredited facility dogs work with community professionals, such as teachers, RCMP and psychologists to help support healthy communities.

PADS is a fully accredited member of Assistance Dogs International.

BREAKING NEWS: PADS is looking for a new home for our Calgary Training Program. We've recently doubled our staff in the Calgary region in order to meet the growing demand for assistance dogs in Alberta. However, after six wonderful years of sharing space with our friends @ChasinTailsDCC their well deserved business growth means we're on the hunt for a new facility.

This is particularly challenging for an organization that needs dog friendly space, in a time when commercial vacancy rates are particularly low.

It’s commonly understood that service dogs should not be distracted or petted when they are working. But we often get asked why? There’re many reasons, but today we’re going to share one.

🦮 The Bond: Bonding is a complex process, like all relationships it takes work and care from both sides. When other people step in—even well meaning—to give food, affection, exercise, etc. This “subtracts” from the bond.

That’s not to say client’s never have anyone interact with their dog partner, but these people are select and few. Most often friends, family or a professional engage intentionally with the dog to support the team's success.

A stranger on the street interacting with the dog isn’t supporting the team, the dog or the bond, more often these interactions are simply meeting an emotional need for the stranger.

🐾 This is particularly true for individuals with physical mobility limitations that might find it challenging to pet their dog from certain positions… where an able bodied stranger can deliver tail scritches and belly rubs with ease. This interaction is building connection with a stranger, and over time that can be detrimental to focus and motivation for even the most devoted service dog!

❤️ See a hard working service dog and feel compelled to interact? Smile at the handler, tell them they have a beautiful, brilliant or bright dog and continue on your way. And…if you really want to get to know a service dog, consider volunteering for an organization like ours and raising one!

🔗 Volunteer today - link in bio to apply.

Congratulations to one of our new Service Dog Teams - Julia and PADS Derby!

💙 We asked Julia to share with us how having Derby has changed her life.

"Derby has brought so much sunshine to my life, she is truly an angel with her sweet and gentle spirit. She brings a smile to me and everyone that meets her. Even my dad, a self proclaimed dog 'un-enthusiast' has said he loves her."

"The main way Derby helps me is to reach things I have dropped on the ground. Before meeting Derby it was a big struggle and caused a lot of strain in my back to stretch and reach things I dropped but with Derby she eagerly and quickly picks those things up for me. Whatever it is, I am grateful for PADS for bringing us together."
